Tutorial Tuesday: How To Make A Pretty Treasury

Tutorial by Tizz from Tizzalicious.

I love Etsy's Treasury feature. For those of you who don't know what a treasury is, this is what Etsy says about it:

"The Treasury is a member-curated gallery of short-lived lists of 12 hand-picked items each. Members can feature their favorite items, items selected on a theme or just whoever they like. The Treasury is not intended for self-promotion, but instead to acknowledge and share the many cool things for sale on Etsy. Admin often choose an exceptional Treasury list to promote to the the homepage hand-picked items."

You don't have to be a seller on Etsy to make a treasury, everyone can make one, and it's a lot of fun! I thought I'd share some tips on how to make a fantastic, front page worthy treasury with you.

Step 1. Think of a theme.
Most great treasuries have some kind of theme. This can be a color, a comibination of colors, or a subject. I personally love color themed treasuries, especially color combinations, because that gives you a bit more to work with, and also allows backgrounds in the pictures that aren't the white that so many people use. Let's say I decide to choose a combination of teal and orange for the treasury I'm making for this tutorial.

Step 2. Start looking for items that fit your theme and add them to your "poster sketch".
Poster Sketch is one of Etsy's lesser known features. It's basically a treasury only you can see. You can think of it as a practice Treasury. You can open and close it as many times as you want, the items you put on there will stay there until you replace them.

Make sure you only choose high quality pictures. One bad picture can ruin the entire look of your treasury!

You will need 16 items. The treasury will only contain 12 of those when it's finished, but you also need 4 "alternatives" to be used when an item is sold. Etsy also sometimes switches it around a bit on the front page.

Step 2. Add pictures to your poster sketch

Step 3. Rearrange the pictures on your poster sketch until it looks good.
Even if all your pictures are nice and coherent, they still might not look too great alltogether. If half of your pictures are one color, and the other half is the other color, try to mix them up a little. Same goes for the backgrounds, if you have some colored and some white backgrounds, or light and dark ones, mix them up, so you have one of everything in every row and column, and they aren't all next to each other.

You can rearrange them by simple dragging an item to a different spot. This makes it switch positions with the item that was in the new spot.

Step 4. Try to grab a treasury!
This has to be the hardest part of getting a treasury. You need to be there right when the treasury "opens", when the number of treasuries drops below 333. Don't worry, you won't have to sit next to your pc refreshing the treasury all day. In fact, it's better not to refresh at all.

Go to the treasury and make sure it's set to be sorted by expire date. Now check the number of treasuries that are currently up and running.

Step 4. Find out when the treasury will open again

As you can see, when I wrote this tutorial there were 544 treasuries. Now how do I find out when it will drop below 333? It's a matter of counting: find out how many treasuries will have to expire before it drops below 333, and just count backwards. If the number that will need to expire, go back a few pages, keeping in mind that there are 20 treasuries on each page. So if 212 treasuries need to expire before it opens (like in this example), you need to be on page 11.

I usually come back a little before it's due to drop below 333 though, because sometimes people delete their treasury early (to grab a new one maybe?), and that would mean you would miss the opening!

Now just wait! Don't refresh or anything, just scroll down the page, and wait. When the treasury drops to 332, a screen will pop up where you can enter the name of your treasury. Make sure you give it a name you want to keep, because you can't change this!

Step 4. A box to enter the name for your treasury pops up when the treasury opens

Step 5. Copy your poster sketch items to your empty treasury.
Once you grabbed your treasury and gave it a name, you can start copying your items to the treasury. Don't forget to include the alternatives too!

Step 6. You are done!
Your treasury is done! You can now show the world your treasury. You can send the link to your treasury to your friends, blog about it, mention it on Twitter, etc. If you would like a picture to go with it, I recomment Thumbalizr or Super Screenshot to take a screenshot.

A few extra tips:

Treasury West
If you don't have the patience to wait for a "real" treasury, try grabbing a treasury west. Treasury west is Etsy's test treasury, and it a lot less well known and crowded. This does mean less people will see it, but if you tell the world about it, it will be seen, and treasury west's can end up on the front page just like the regular ones.

You can find treasury west here. Or by adding "_west" in the address bar of the regular treasury, between "treasury" and ".php", like this: "http://www.etsy.com/treasury_west.php".

Street Team Treasuries
If you are a member of any Etsy street team, add items of your fellow street team members to the treasury, and mention the team in the title. This gives great exposure for your team!

Different kinds of items
It's always nice if a treasury has a bit of variety, and it seems like the front page people think so too! So don't fill your treasury with jewelry, but mix it up a little, add a plushie, a bag, some housewares, a pretty dress,...well, you get the idea!

Find the stars!
To find out if another member featured you in their treasury, just find the stars! Go through the pages of the treasury listings, when you are featured you will see a yellow star next to the title, like this:

When are one of your items is an alternative, the star will be greyish blue.

Good luck everyone! I hope this was helpful!
