Multicolored Monday

Hello! This is Maartje (aka Tizz) from Tizzalicious. Some of you might know me, as I am the creator and former team leader of the Crafting in Color Team. I didn't have enough time to keep the job, so I passed it on to Christine (who is doing a fantastic job!). However, I wanted to be a little more involved with the team again, so from now on I will be brightening up your mondays here at the CIC blog.

Let's get started, I hope you will enjoy my picks!

Have a colorful week!

Member Spotlight - MandeeFranee Designs

Name: Miranda (MandeeFranee)
Age: 34
Location: Walled Lake, MI
Shop: MandeeFranee Designs (http://www.etsy.com/shop/mandeefranee)

What kind of things do you make?
I make camera accessories called Lens Pets, as well as sock monsters.

How long have you been doing your craft?
I've only been doing this for a few months. I made my very first sock monster ever in April 2010, with my first Lens Pet just about a month later.

When did you start selling and what inspired you to start selling?
I had opened an Etsy shop in November of 09 after being laid off when the scrapbook store where I was working closed. I had no idea what I was going to be putting in it at the time. After making my first sock monster (with one of my son's holey socks) I started getting requests for them. Then a photographer friend asked if I could make a "scrunchie with a face" for her to put on her camera to attract the attention of the children she was photographing. After making my first ones I was overwhelmed with requests for Lens Pets and sock monsters from friends/acquaintances on Facebook. There were so many requests I thought maybe my designs would appeal to a larger audience! I listed my very first Lens Pets on May 25, 2010 and things took off shortly after that!

Is this your full time job?
At the moment, yes. Because the economy in Michigan still stinks, and I have not found another job, I am working my tail off to make sure my shop brings in enough income to pay the bills.

What are your hobbies?
I love photography (nature photography especially) and scrapbooking.

What is your favorite color?
I don't know if I could pick just one, I LOVE bright colors! Usually I answer PINK when someone asks this question, but I also love lime green and turquoise! :)

What is your favorite color combination?
Pink and lime green and turquoise ;)

Which colors do you use most in your work?
Because what I make is specifically intended to catch the eye, I use LOTS of color in my work. Every bright color I can get my hands on!

What is your number 1 tip for success?
Promote, promote, promote... I think I have had the success I have because my name has been all over the internet these last couple months. I started out by posting on blogs/link parties, then I was being mentioned on photography blogs and people's FB pages. I opened my own FB page/blog/Twitter, I've run FB ads... the more I promote the more sales I have. When I do nothing, sales are much slower.

What do you think is the most fun way to promote?
I really like FB and Twitter because I'm able to interact with people there.

Member Spotlight - Paper Demon Jewelry

Name: Karen Kelsky
Age: 45
Location: Eugene, Oregon, USA
Shop: Paper Demon Jewelry - http://www.etsy.com/shop/paperdemonjewelry

What kind of things do you make?
I make what I like to call "bold jewelry for bold women"! My jewelry is high impact jewelry made from natural materials like silk and plant fibers, bamboo, and copper. Much of my material comes from Japan but my aesthetic is modern and geometric, and above all, colorful. Japanese handmade paper is created in a mind-blowing range of colors that become even more saturated and lucious and translucent when the paper is treated with the resins and mediums that I use to harden them in the jewelry. It's the perfect combination of saturated and translucent.

How long have you been doing your craft?
I learned to work with fine handmade Japanese papers 25 years ago from an artist in the mountains of Japan. I've made endless different things with paper, but what I most love is transforming paper and other natural materials into durable, lasting, beautiful accessories that can be worn every day.

When did you start selling and what inspired you to start selling?
I started selling about a year ago. I wanted to liberate the papers and fibers from my 25 year collection and send them out into the world! I wanted people to be able to enjoy them as much as I do, and see the amazing things that can be made from them.

Is this your full time job?
It is now. I quit a career as a professor to pursue my dream! It is not paying the mortgage yet though.

What are your hobbies?I love to explore the incredible place I live in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest, and funky Eugene, Oregon. Since my time is divided between Paper Demon Jewelry and family--partner and two kids-- I don't have time for other hobbies.

What is your favorite color?
Yikes, changes daily! But right now gorgeous teal.

What is your favorite color combination?
I am currently entranced with sky blue and lime green.

Which colors do you use most in your work?
I adore blues and purples, greens and oranges.

What is your number 1 tip for success?
Promote, promote, promote. I'm still learning that. But also, be real. I think that a person's personality and their story is one of their greatest assets. But it takes a long time to figure out how exactly to tell that story, and what versions of it are best for promoting a jewelry business. I'm still in process on that.

What do you think is the most fun way to promote?
I love my Facebook fan page. I have always loved Facebook, and I find it a very natural and intimate way to connect with fans, and keep an open dialogue with them about what I'm up to, and what they'd like to see Paper Demon Jewelry become...
