Name Claudia LilianaAge 39
Location México
Shop Artisan Of Whimsy (rasamalai @ etsy)
What kind of things do you make?
I make whimsical items, usually a mixture of techniques that include embroidery, drawing and paper cutting. according to my current cravings. The final product may be a felt doll charm, an ACEO, a card or a windsock, but the main intention behind what I make is to bring beauty into our everyday life. I love art-object, I believe everything that surrounds us should be beautiful and make us feel good and I try to make beautiful things that are useful.
How long have you been doing your craft?
I started drawing and writing poems as a child.
When did you start selling and what inspired you to start selling?
I started selling my crafts 14 years ago. It was hard at first to part with my creations until I started making more than one item of each, now I’m OK with selling the one special item!
I guess my motivation is and was back then that this is all I know how to do so it makes sense to make a living out of it.
Is this your full time job?
Yes it is.
What are your hobbies?
I sing in a wonderful choir that I’m very grateful to be part of called “Coro de Santiago”, I occasionally blog about it. My favorite music at the moment is 17th century Mexican music.
What is your favorite color?
Blue, like a peacock’s feather or a flame, or the sky at dawn or dusk .
What is your favorite color combination?
There are so many, I don’t have a formula. Green with blue, hot pink with orange are a couple of my favorites that I would suggest.
Which colors do you use most in your work?
it depends on my mood, I tend to mix as many colors as possible. Although recently I’ve been playing with black and white, just a little bit.
What is your number 1 tip for success?
To focus on the good things, there is always good and bad and not often well balanced but if we focus on the bad things or the negative experiences: that becomes our life.
If instead we focus on what we enjoy and the little things that bring us happiness and a sense of accomplishment that energy keeps us moving forward.
What do you think is the most fun way to promote?
I think word of mouth has more weight and the most pleasant experiences I’ve had is when someone else has mentioned my crafts because they liked them :)

Member Spotlight- Teka and Zoe
I have to apologize for the tardiness of this post. It is a Wednesday feature, although I know it is showing up on a Thursday. Please pardon...
This week's featured member is Michelle of Teka and Zoe. I personally really love the modern colors with organic shapes and textures. Not only are the pieces beautifully shaped, but the colors are used in a way to give each piece of jewelry a texture of its own. I'm really excited to show off some of her work... if youre interested in any of the pieces, just click on the picture and it will take you straight to the etsy listing.
And now for the interview!

Name: Michelle Mahler
Age: old enough to know better.
Location: Gardnerville, NV

What kind of things do you make?
Colorful & Organic Enameled Jewelry - modern, organic casual styles. All enamels are vitreous enamel that are kiln fired.
How long have you been doing your craft?
I have been enameling for 2 years. I have been crafting for a lifetime.
When did you start selling and what inspired you to start selling?
I have been selling various forms of artwork for 20 years. It has been so long I don;t know what inspired me to start. I think it is just in my being. I have a second on-line store not related to my jewelry that I have been at for 13 years. I began selling on Etsy since 2007
Is this your full time job?
Yes plus I have 3 small children: Zach just started kindergarten, Nicolas and Natalie are Pre-K, a Hubby too!
What are your hobbies?
Right now my hobbies have been set aside. I actually consider my jewelry my creative outlet. I have SO many things I WANT to do in the wings from knitting a purse out of sari ribbon to sewing for my daughter. Way to many ideas...sooo little time. I also like to do digital scrap booking. AND I have 2 Blogs! Go figure. If I only did not have to sleep.
What is your favorite color?
Purple and Green, my logo colors for Teka and Zoe. I find them ever so yummy. I have always loved purple even as a child(my bedroom was painted lavender and hot pink)
What is your favorite color combination?
It seems my favorite combination is the one I am currently working on. It changes. Right now I am exploring Mossy Old Ivory. I LOVE IT.
Which colors do you use most in your work?
All colors! Always looking for new blends. My customers are the best inspiration. They push me to try things I do not think of or would never try. I am always happy to take special orders.
What is your number 1 tip for success?
Don't give up! Take good picture and crop them tight. I see so many pictures on Etsy that have to much empty space around them and I just want to download them and crop them myself.
What do you think is the most fun way to promote?
This is hard for me. I have so little time that I feel so uncreative when it comes to this. But I really enjoy Facebook as you get to meet other artist's and your customers. And it is fun and quick. I have found such good inspiration from people I have met on Facebook.

Name: Sara & Ben
Age: Sara 24, Ben 34
Location: Portland, OR
Shop: http://etsy.com/shop/kittyBBlove
What kind of things do you make?
We make functionally cute things. Our favorite item are "kitty egg" crayons. We also make beeswax candles, cards, and bowling sets.
How long have you been doing your craft?
We've been making crayons and silicone molds for almost 2 years now. We both have BFA art degrees- one in Drawing & Painting, and one in Apparel design & manufacturing. We're also pretty capable in other crafting arenas like photography, graphic design, woodworking, knitting/crocheting, paper arts, screen printing, etc.
When did you start selling and what inspired you to start selling?
Sara found out she was pregnant late 2008 and as recent college graduates in the down turned economy, finding work was not easy... in fact it never happened. We knew we had talent to put to work, so instead of hoping for someone to see that, we decided to do something for ourselves. Our main inspiration was our unborn son and the "children" we already were taking care of... our cats.
And so in early January 2009, Kitty Baby Love was born!
Is this your full time job?
It is and it isn't. Kitty Baby Love is definitely a significant source of our income, but we also supplement with a part-time job at a local fabric manufacturer- not to mention being full-time parents!
What are your hobbies?
Ben has had a life-long affair with painting & music and is currently playing around with home modified vintage recording equipment. Currently Sara is focused on being a mommy and in her spare time enjoys reading about children education & parenting philosophies. She hopes to one day be a midwife.
What is your favorite color?
Ben- yellow-orange
Sara- silver
What is your favorite color combination?
We both like a lighter blue against a deep red/orange.
Which colors do you use most in your work?
It always feels like we're trying to find or peel more yellow crayons.
What is your number 1 tip for success?
Find out what your core values are and build your business around that.
What do you think is the most fun way to promote?
Collaborating with other artisans and bloggers.
